Environmental impact of rejuvenators in asphalt mixtures containing high reclaimed asphalt content

The use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is increasing importance due to fast-growing amounts demolished road materials. However, can contain relevant pollutants such as carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and toxic metals. In order improve the mechanical properties recycled asphalt, rejuvenators are used reduce stiffness aged binder. These in turn may potentially mobilise like PAHs facilitate their leaching surface ground waters. environmental impact three with good performance was studied. assessed by determining metal- PAH contents RAP leachates. Chemical analyses showed that did not from materials for 2–3 ring PAHs. some 4–6 relatively less indeed leached more easily unaged material. Ageing reduced tendency leaching, without rejuvenator.
